Minority Languages in Europe: On October 16-17 of this year and event will take place at the European Parliament with the participation of community media representatives. The event will concern itself with the proliferation of minority languages across Europe and inclusive approaches to social and cultural diversity in the media landscapes. This workshop will deal with the preparations for this event from the view of community broadcasters around Europe.

Information sharing and networking/archiving issues: Editorial exchange between not-for-profit media outlets is, while essential for a working exhange of ideas across European borders, at times not easy to achieve. In this workshop, participants were introduced to the editorial exchange platform freie-radios.net. Here, users can find more than 50.000 audio features from community radio stations (not only) from the german-speaking regions collected in a little over 11 years now. Participants are advised on how to start on this kind of feature exchange and how it can propel forward editorial exchange between stations and across borders altogether.

Certified Community Radio and Media Literacy courses in Ireland: Within the framework of the Grundtvig learning parnership ‘understanding media’ media trainers from CRAOL in Ireland introduce participants (not only) from the project to their concept of media education and certification. They give examples of their media literacy training tools and show, how they are trying to communicate a concept of critical media reception and production to growing parts of the irish society.

Here is some information from the workshop:

1. Media literacy – A core principle of media education
2. Framing elements of news – A media literacy review
3. What media literacy really is – Core signs

Communication and CommunicACTION – Public goods, social movements and community broadcasters: Democratic processes and social movements in Europe are facing a number of issues – be it the missing or weak support for free media outlests from central and eastern European governments or the digitilisation process underway in lots of European nations, which turns out might overlook community media in many places altogether. This session dealt with the political situation in Hungary and the effects it’s having on community media, die development of free communication conducted in minority languages and minority language media outlets and the efforts made by the CMFE, concerning diigitilisation as well as recognition of community media in the political realm of the European Union.

Community radio solidarity in times of crisis: The safekeeping of activists for basic human rights is way behind schedule. Europes governments as well as international organisations are not giving the issues nearly as much attention as it deserves right now. The results are extreme problems for media activists around the globe, but especially on the African contentinent. Their political surroundings make it almost impossible to found and fund new community media initiatives in the region. This plenary session tells participants why that is and what European community media and their associations (especially in the western part of Europe) can do to restart these processes and draw attention to the massive problems almost anywhere in the world.

Transcultural Transmedia Transformation in the MENA Region: The Arab Spring and the media. This plenary session dealt with the stauts of freedom of speech in Tunisia, Lybia, Palestine and Jemen. This panel finalises the Conference and is supposed to be a stepping for AMARC and other international organisation in the media field to reposition themselves concerning media development and the general development of free speech and basic human rights in the countries of the arab spring.

1. Media literacy – A core principle of media education
2. Framing elements of news – A media literacy review
3. What media literacy really is – Core signs
